Seminar on Media Innovation

Context

The media industry is undergoing a fundamental transformation caused by digitalization. Media consumption is shifting away from traditional media such as TV or newspaper towards mobile and delayed consumption. The boundaries between media producers and consumers are getting blurred, and personalized content is increasingly important. Machine learning and AI are crucial tools to help to create better content, understand the consumers’ preferences and surface the essential stories in times of information overload.  

Course Topics

This seminar introduces students to the latest research in the field of media technology and innovation. It is an exciting field laying at the intersection of computer vision, computer graphics, natural language processing, and machine learning. The seminar will cover a broad spectrum of topics considering not only the technical innovations but also the possibilities these technologies provide to professionals in the media industry and consumers of media.

Learning Objectives

The objectives of this seminar are twofold: (1) learning about recent developments in the area of media technology at the intersection of computer vision, computer graphics, natural language processing, and machine learning and (2) to improve presentation and critical analysis skills.

Administration

Number of participants limited to 24.

The deadline for deregistering expires at the end of the second week of the semester. Students who are still registered after that date, but do not attend the seminar, will officially fail the seminar.

Presence

Presence is mandatory to pass the seminar. If a student cannot attend a seminar session, the reason (e.g. medical certificate) has to be given before the session and must be accepted by one of the organizers. More than three missed seminar sessions can cause the student to fail the course. The dates for the presentations can not be moved except if there is someone willing to switch.

Grading

The presentation of the selected paper contributes 85% to the final grade. Additionally, the students are required to submit a short abstract of each paper before the class as well as to participate in the group discussions following the presentations. Both will be documented by the organizers, contributing 15% to the final grade.
